And Megser and I try to look at each other but itâs too hard.
And heâs frowning. âWHERE DID YOU GET THIS?â
And I have to go: âA charity shop.â
And he goes: âWHERE?â
And I am PANICKING because I have ZERO idea what the problem is or who exactly is in trouble: me/the charity shop/the person who GAVE it to the charity shop.
And I channel my Inner Disgraced Politcian and go: âI canât remember.â
And Quentin Schaeffer goes: âCan I keep this? Iâll swap you for a brand-new one.â
And Meg goes: âNO.â (Her theory shared later was that itâs worth
And he just shrugs and says: âWell, I canât exactly sign an already signed book, can I?â
And I literally donât know if he can. Then â to mine and Megserâs GREAT SURPRISE â I go: âYou knew my mom.â
âWhoâs your mom?â says Quentin. And Valentina looks pre-jealous in the eye.
âLaurie Brown. She was a writer tooââ
âYou donât need to explain to ME who Laurie Brown is,â he says, and he sits back. âI didnât know Laurie had a daughter. So how old are you back there, Mr Dinosaur?â
âSixteen,â I say. And Iâm all âI think you and my mom were on a panel in Nice together years ago when her fantasy novel came out.â
âAh, YES,â he says. And he turns to Valentina, and goes: âHer mom wrote a fantasy novel and it was ââ PAUSE â âgooood,â and he nods. âActually, I think our panel at that convention was about whether female authors can write fantasy. Or SHOULD. I canât remember which. But she ⦠held her own.â
Iâm imagining Megserâs costume filling up with steam that turns into sweat that rises up to chin level so she has to stab her own head or sheâll DROWN.
Quentin is nodding in a reminiscing kind of way. âThat was a very time.â
âWhat do you mean âSPECIALâ?â says Meg. And itâs like this HISS of WILD ACCUSATION.
But Quentin Schaeffer just shrugs. âWe were young writers starting out: hopeful and unburdened. We had four days in Nice, drinking champagne, partying, being treated like rock stars. We hadnât a care in the world.â Pause. âNo kids.â
And Megser who likes to just goes: âThe dedication you wrote to Elleryâs mom ⦠we donât have that book with us ⦠SAYS â¦â And then pauses long enough for Quentin to realise Valentina might need to go pick him up lunch. In reluctant obedience, as Mom used to say about my room-tidying, she leaves. Then Megser RECITES an extract from the dedication: We told each other weâre in love! The waterbabies we would have! And they would swim to shore each night. And write their stories in the sand!
And even IâM thinking sheâs a for knowing it off by heart. âWhat did you MEAN by that?â she says to Quentin Schaeffer.
